I have heard other performers say that as well, they can't see when they are leaving the stage. Plus,the fans would be all over him!

I believe he needed assistance because of the barrage of pictures taken as he left the stage. He was temporarily blinded. I heard Joe Esposito say that.

Unless this was in College Park in '74. From what I heard he could barely walk at all that night. But that, like so many other stories, could be an exaggeration.
